Mainz – Germany

By Petra van der Veen, 21 March 2010 15:07

After a long cold winter spring begins. And this year it begins on Saturday, February 27 when I Muvrini resumed their European tour, which they had started on the 5th in Amphion, France. When I pass the border to Germany the sky is misty grey, but in Mainz the sun is shining and the temperature has risen to 14 degrees. It is a beautiful day to see I Muvrini again.
I arrive at the Christ Church in Mainz at 14.00. The crew is already busy with building up the stage. I greet the roadie Laurent, and understand he is too busy to talk and decide to walk to the city center to enjoy the beautiful weather. When I come back after two hours, everything is in place and the band had already arrived. The sound check takes quite some time since this is the first concert of the series to promote the new album ‘Gioia’. The band looks a little tired and a little later I hear from guitarist Mickey the reason for this: they all have come away from Paris, where they have played a concert in the studio of the French radio station France Bleu. In a couple of vans, they have now made the five-hour trip, so there has not been much time to sleep.
At the sound check a lot of attention goes into rehearsing the new songs. When Alain is singing “Elli A Sanu” Jean-Francois gives his thumbs up, asking me if I like the song. And yes, I like it. After a few evenings I even think it’s the best song of the concert, and I hope it is going to be the new single, though I have not heard the new album yet, so I do not know what the song will sound like as a single. But the strong voice of Alain which opens the song, the beautiful voices of Cesar Anot and Loïc Taillebrest, and the full strong voice of Jean-François himself in the middle of the song when he enters the stage, are in my opinion a guarantee for a big success.à mon avis

The concert has been sold out some time already, and when the doors are opened the church fills up really fast until nobody can find a free place anymore. For me it’s a reunion with my German friends Annette and Christian, whom I have met in August in Belgium. Travelling around to attend a concert of I Muvrini is no longer exceptional. We have been looking forward for this concert for a long time and are glad that it going to start soon now.
But a rock concert in a church is surely something extraordinary. A church is not built for occasions like these and the sound just can hardly be perfect. Fortunately it is not too bad, but it will be much better the next evening in a real pop venue like the Oosterpoort in Groningen is.
For the translations of the spoken texts by Jean-François Kim Altmeyer has been invited once again. She does the job incredibly quickly and professionally, as far as I can judge it. She also translates effortlessly from the Corsican language. She has also invited a number of students again and one of them is playing the violin. As the last encore of the evening she and Laurence Dupuis play Diu Vi Salvi Regina, accompanying the students singing with Jean-François, Alain and Stéphane. This sounds remarkably wonderful in a church like this.

When the applause has finally faded away and everyone has left the church. Jean-Francois, Alain and Stéphane come back to the hall of the church to sing another paghjella. There is also a table drawn up in the hall and behind it Jean-François and Alain are signing autographs. Besides this, Jean-François turns up in a circle with the children and performs a funny dance with them. He knows the gestures and moves remarkably well, so they must have practiced it more often. All in all it was a fantastic, memorable evening, there in Mainz. I wonder if the band will have the same success the next day in the north of my homeland, in Groningen.
